Marine Fish Invertebrates Corals Macroalgae

Groupers:

Groupers belong to the Serranidae family. The most common genus of this family of fish found in the aquarium trade is Cephalopholis. Groupers belonging to the genera Variola, Cromileptes, and Grammistes are also available. Most Groupers grow quite large (over 12 inches) in an aquarium and frequently outgrow the average-sized aquarium. The largest member of this family can attain a size of over eight feet in length in the wild.

Groupers are closely related to Pseudochromis, and can be recognized by their large mouth, and the three spines or plates on their gill covering. Some Groupers are called Soapfish, and can secrete a mucus of toxins to ward off predators. Groupers are found throughout the world, and are most commonly associated with coral reefs or rocky areas.
